Global Initiatives Bio

Dr. Borris has worked tireless in the area of political and peace psychology throughout her career. One of her motivations for writing "Finding Forgiveness" is that she remembers thinking as a child the words "never again" as she heard stories about the holocaust. Unfortunately humanity is still facing many atrocities including genocide which is why Dr. Borris is committed to the field of international conflict resolution including forgiveness and reconciliation on a political level.

In 1992 Dr. Borris founded Peace Initiatives whose mission is to promote the building of cultures of peace based on programs that facilitate the process of conflict transformation in situations of deep-rooted social conflict especially through the processes of forgiveness and reconciliation. The purpose of Peace Initiatives is to promote peacemaking and conflict resolution programs between diverse groups on the local, national, and international level. This is done by facilitating dialogues and developing conflict resolution training programs that aids in the healing of historical hatred, enmity, racism, prejudice and discrimination. It promotes nonviolence, forgiveness and reconciliation.

Dr. Borris is also the Director of Training for the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy (IMTD). The Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy is a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 by Ambassador John W. McDonald and Dr. Louise Diamond. The mission of IMTD is to promote a systems-based approach to peacebuilding and to facilitate the transformation of deep-rooted social conflict through education, conflict resolution training and communication. The Institute is based in Arlington, VA.

Since 1992 the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy has initiated and facilitated conflict transformation projects throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Most recently, IMTD has been working on projects linked to Georgia, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Somalia, Israel and Palestine, Pakistan and Kashmir as well as on issues related to Water and Peace and the inclusion of conflict resolution training in military institutes. Using a systems-based approach, IMTD facilitates dialogue between various groups to promote structural change enabling long-term, sustainable peace. By transforming conflict through a multi-track lens, IMTD's activities address the tangible and intangible conditions perpetuating a conflict, thus expanding the traditional framework of peacemaking to include both official and unofficial spheres.

As Director of Training Dr. Borris designs and implements comprehensive peacebuilding and conflict resolution programs which includes programs in training of trainers, negotiation, dialogue, women and peacebuilding, multi-track diplomacy, trauma healing, forgiveness and reconciliation. These programs are developed within a broader context of capacity building and strengthening civil society. A focal point of her work is on the region of South Asia especially Kashmir, India including with the Tibetan government in exile and Nepal where she has worked for over 10 years. She also gives workshops on the healing of trauma, forgiveness and reconciliation within the broader context of conflict resolution and international peacebuilding. Dr. Borris has a special interest in working with women in development and has worked with women in the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nepal and in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The most current project is working with Indian and Pakistani Kashmiri's which is an ongoing project where Dr. Borris had given a number of conflict resolution training programs in Washington and in the Maldives with both Indian and Pakistani Kashmiri's.

When Dr. Borris is not in the field working in areas of conflict she brings back her knowledge and works with students and those already in the field of government and working in non-governmental organizations. She teaches "Reconciliation and Forgiveness in Post-Conflict Environments" at the American University, School of International Service, Peacebuilding Institute, and the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR) at George Mason University in Washington, DC, focusing on the complex issues of forgiveness processes as it relates to trauma healing and reconciliation. The class also discussed different reconciliation models including the International Criminal Court, truth and commissions, the more recent development of hybrids. Dr. Borris is also teaching a course on "Conflict Management and Social Change" at Thunderbird - the School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona.

Dr. Borris is an active member of the American Psychological Association and is a former past president of Division 48- the Society for the Study of Peace, Conflict and Violence of the American Psychological Association. She was also a member of the Committee for International Relations in Psychology for APA.
